It’s a warm to the day at 40 degrees.
My first stop is right where I was last night, at Exclosure. Once I climb the hill, I quickly locate the cow bison’s carcass, still caught on the rocks.
It looks undisturbed.
Watchers are spread out in Lamar but no one has any Mollies in sight.
I move on to Coyote where I join Gary. He has found three grizzlies already today. He helps me see two of them but the third is already out of sight.
So, on to Slough. My first wolf is a black at the natal den. It may be 1385 but she is only in view a few minutes before disappearing back inside.
Later, 907 emerges from the sage den. She takes a nursing break and beds down left of the den, looking intently to the west.
I don’t see these two wolves interact today, so maybe they’ve put aside whatever went wrong yesterday.
Someone finds a grizzly family in the yellow grass meadow. It’s the sow with two yearlings. Yet another grizzly appears to the west, above the conifer-aspen forest.
Compared to yesterday’s drama and mystery, today is downright boring!
Around 9:30 I start back to Silver Gate to finish my packing and to clean before I return to Bozeman.
A light rain is falling as I depart Silver Gate, but it only lasts about 15 minutes.
Several people are up on Exclosure Hill, but they tell me the carcass is still undiscovered. I find out later that it remained intact until a bear found it on Wednesday! The Mollies finally feast on it Thursday.
It’s quiet at Slough when I pass by. I scope anyway but see nothing moving. At Aspen I spot a coyote with an injured back leg.
I stop at Long Pullout to watch my seventh grizzly of the day. It’s a good-looking bear, digging away right at the tree line.
And at Floating Island lake I see a cow moose.
I stop once more at Blacktail ponds to check the bison carcass. It’s still untouched, a bloated mound of pink and white. Note: the next day, a grizzly mom with two yearling cub finally opened it up.
I have an easy drive back, reflecting on all the amazing things I saw this trip. Wow!
Today I saw: 7 grizzly bears (including 2 cubs), bison, coyotes, elk, moose, pronghorn,
2 Junction wolves (907F and 1385F) and the spirits of Allison, Richard, Jeff and Chloe.
