My first stop is at Trash Can to listen for howling. Instead, I hear geese!
I make my way to Lamar Canyon West and scan for Junctions. None are sighted, despite watchers on Bob’s and Dave’s.
I move on to Boulder while others spread out from here to Nature Trail. Alas, not a single wolf is found.
A few people see a black bear up above the den cliff. Several of us see coyotes from a few different locations. But no wolves.
I drive up the Dunraven road to scope Antelope Creek. I see only a few bison and a soaring red-tailed hawk.
While I’m up here, I hear a radio call about possible canids in eastern Lamar. So, I head that way.
I find Paul at Exclosure and climb up to join him. We look where everyone else is looking but all we see is a coyote mousing in the rendezvous.
The heat waves are pretty intense so people can be forgiven for thinking this animal was a wolf.
Paul and I remind each other how lucky we have been to have had such dependable views of Junctions for so long.
Around noon I go in for a break, passing the limping limping coyote at 21’s crossing. He’s now survived for four years with that injury!
Maureen and Rick and I go out for the evening, making our usual stop at Canyon West.
When we see nothing from here, I drive on to Rick’s pullout. I scope by myself there for a solid half hour, checking all the edges of the trough. But I see only bison and elk.
Gary reports a black bear sleeping on top of the den west of the big lot near Petrified Tree.
It’s a gorgeous, warm night and it’s great to be out in it, even without wolves to watch.
On our way home, luck sends us a consolation prize via a sighting of three bull moose at Round Prairie.
We see the usual mule deer, too.
It's been a long time since I went to bed wolfless for the day, but we did try our best. Fingers crossed for tomorrow!
Today I saw: bison, coyotes, A bald eagle, elk, a red-tailed hawk, 3 moose, pronghorn, 0 wolves and
the spirits of Allison, Richard, Jeff and Chloe.
