DAY SIX - Friday, February 28

LAST DAY RESCUES

I’m out again for my last day at 6:20. It’s 28 degrees.

As I go east, I am treated again to a pretty sunrise. This one is pink, peach, gold and lavender.

I happily join fellow watchers at Nature Trail, at a wolf-sighting already in progress.

Once I’m set up I am instructed to find the alerted bison herd a bit to the right of where we had wolves yesterday.

I find the herd and soon see the backs and tails of wolves among them. They are testing the herd. A foreground berm blocks most of our view.

The two wolf backs I see soon become four, then six. Then a gray makes seven. Finally, these seven wolves emerge fully into view at the left end of the berm.

They move a bit further, leaving the bison behind. They bed down in front of the “island of trees”. After a minute or two a few more wolves arrive and join them.

But they don’t stay bedded long. They group gets up and starts moving east with determination. Alas, they drop lower and lower, following the topography of the area.

One by one I lose them until I have only one black in view. This trailing wolf carries a stick or bone.

He follows the leaders downslope until I no longer have an wolves in view.

Jeff and I go to S Curves in hopes of being able to see them from the different angle, but it doesn’t work.

We go back to Nature Trail where I see Rick walking out west from the pullout over packed snow. I join him but unfortunately this spot doesn’t work either.

Time to go east.

We find nothing at Hellroaring nor Elk Creek. Krisztina radios from Slough that she has nothing there either.

I continue into Little America to check the carcass south of Longs once more. I see no coyotes today, and just a few birds.

My next stop is Canyon West. Nothing to see but bison.

I continue to Lamar, where I get a surprise sighting of a mama moose with 2 calves north of Fisherman’s. They create a mini-jam.

Around 10:30 I call it a day and begin my drive back to BZN, stopping to say goodbye to my fellow watchers as I come upon them.

My last sighting on this trip comes on 89 where I see a very large herd of mule deer.

Today I saw: bison, mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, 9 Rescue wolves (8 black 1 gray) and the spirits of Allison, Richard, Jeff and Chloe.
